Katahdin Wings has a new website!

Welcome to Katahdin Wings’ new website! It serves as a news and event hub for members and an entry point for prospective members. It is your site, and can serve as a community hub to keep us connected when we can't be together in person.

I’m Susanna French, website editor, and here’s what you’ll find:

  • I've scoured the web for upcoming events, both by the 99s and by local flying clubs and organizations. You can browse upcoming events on the homepage, or dive into past events at the bottom of the Events page. Where possible, I include AirNav and airport links with each event. And it's not just a list of fly-ins: it's history talks and kids' activities at regional museums, chances to volunteer, competitions, online book talks, compass rose paintings and more.

  • Our News section has selections from regional and national 99s publications, as well as the best submissions: personal stories. I welcome any and all reports of your new ratings, trip reports, fun anecdotes, member spotlights, volunteer requests, or whatever you want to share with the chapter. Don't forget photos and captions!

  • There's good career advice in our page on flight training and careers, and our scholarships page tells you how you can pay for it with help from the Ninety-Nines and other organizations. If you'd like to give back with your experience, mentoring is a great way to do that.

  • You can get to know your local airport better—or help prepare for trips to regional destinations—by acquainting yourself with flying clubs in the northern New England states. If you've been looking for a fun day trip, check out local airport restaurants and museums. If you have a favorite destination that isn't on the site, let me know! I'm also amassing a list of books, movies, podcasts, social media accounts and websites that would be interesting to members. Add your favorites to the list!

  • Let's make this a lively hub for all our members - and an attractive resource for prospective members! And if you have any information on the history of the chapter, I'd like to post that as well.

As for me, I grew up in Bedford, New York. Family friend and dear mentor Bob Parke, a B-17 pilot and the former editor of Flying magazine, encouraged my interests in both flying and writing, and remains a huge influence in my life. I started training at OXC in high school, then got my PPL in 1992 at the University of North Dakota. I was grounded for medical reasons six months later, and have been longing for the air ever since. I stay involved with aviation in whatever way I can, like this! I'm a professional web producer in Vermont (near 2B9, Post Mills) and live with my husband, college-bound daughter, two cats and seven chickens. My side gig is creating historical reproductions of suffrage sashes, of all things, a job that's taken me from national protests to Broadway and back again.

How can our website be most useful to you? What would you like to see? Contact me anytime with comments, questions or website submissions! I look forward to hearing from you.
